FAQ - Cabin Information

Back to FAQ Main Page

What are the different cabin categories?

Most cruise lines offer a similar classification of stateroom types. Most cabins are classified as one of four categories: inside, oceanview, oceanview with balcony, or suite.

  • Inside cabins are generally the smallest cabins onboard and have no views.
  • Oceanview cabins have windows or portholes.
  • Oceanview cabins with balconies have windows and ocean-facing balconies.
  • Suites have windows and often balconies; they're generally the largest cabins onboard and offer the most amenities.

Should I consider an upgrade to an oceanview or balcony cabin?

Different passengers have different cabin preferences. Some passengers book an inside cabin in order to save money. The difference between an inside and an outside or and outside and a balcony cabin can be as little as $100 per person, so the choice to upgrade is not as daunting as it might appear. Many new ships now feature a large quantity of balcony cabins, making them more affordable than ever before. Many CruiseNow customers tell us they are glad they ended up paying a little bit more for the upgraded cabin.

How many people can my cabin accommodate?

Occupancy varies by cabin category and cruise line. Most cabins comfortably accommodate two guests, however, some cabins may sleep up to three or four guests. Specific occupancy details are listed on the cabin category page during the booking process. Some ships even offer “family staterooms” that can accommodate up to 8 guests. A CruiseNow.com personal cruise guide can recommend the best cabin for your situation.

What standard amenities are included in each cabin?

While amenities vary by cruise line, most cabins offer beds, storage space, televisions, telephones, and private bathrooms. Most cabins also have personal safes. If your cabin doesn’t have its own safe, you have the option of storing valuables in the ship’s vault. In addition most cabins also include a hair dryer and toiletries like soap and shampoo.

Can I bring a hairdryer or other electrical appliances with me?

Electric razors and hair dryers can be brought with you. Staterooms for most cruise lines are equipped with 110 volts AC and are capable of handling all normal appliances. Some appliances may require the use of an adapter. Keep in mind, cruise lines do not provide irons in your stateroom and they prefer that you do not bring one along, due to the fire hazard. There is often laundry service on board should you need a special outfit ironed. There is a small charge for that service.

What is a “guarantee cabin”?

This is an interesting opportunity for certain customers. When you book a cabin guarantee, an actual cabin in your selected category will not be assigned at the time of booking, but will be assigned at the time of ship check-in, with the possibility of an upgrade. Final cabin category and location (including deck) are at the total discretion of the cruise line. It is not recommended that you book a “guarantee” cabin if you are traveling with others and want to assure you are in cabins near each other. Also if you are concerned about being in a certain part of the ship it is not recommended to book a guarantee stateroom. Other than those two concerns a guarantee cabin is a great way to secure a free upgrade!

Are there different classes of service on cruise ships?

Today's cruise ships are "one class." Everyone on board can use all of the ship's facilities.

Is it possible that my cabin will be located below water?

No, all passenger cabins are located above sea level.

Will I get bored or feel confined?

Not likely. Cruise ships are like floating resorts and offer just as many options as a fine resort. It usually takes a couple of days to fully explore all the onboard possibilities. In addition, you have the opportunity to explore new and exciting ports of call. You can take time to yourself lying poolside on a deck chair or you can join a dance class or sports activity. Later, catch a movie, play chess, rock climb or even go ice skating. The choices are endless.
