Why You Fail at Getting That Cruise Deal

Who doesn’t want to save a buck or two, especially in this economy?

But do you seem to fail at getting that awesome cruise deal?

To get the best travel deal possible–AVOID these errors like the plague:

  1. Waiting too long—some people believe the closer to sailing, the better the rate. This is actually completely false. As the cruise ship fills up the rates go up. The chances are pretty high that if you wait until a week or two prior to sailing, you will be paying a higher rate than people who booked earlier. If you decide to reserve your cruise in advance in most cases if the rate drops before final payment your agent can get you the lower rate, but the price will never go up. If you really would like to wait, usually the price on a cruise is as low as it will go 5 to 6 weeks prior to sailing. Remember this is only if they still have space left. If the ship is filling up just fine then they will not lower the price.
  2. Using a travel agent you are not familiar with—if you find an agent that is knowledgeable and goes above and beyond, stay with that agent! They will make sure you are getting the best rate and will usually notify you if there is a special going on for a destination you are looking for. They will take care of you if you take care of them. Stay loyal if you find a great agent, you will get a better deal and outstanding service. What could be better?
  3. Not trying new cruise lines—the cruise lines have to be competitive with each other so try a different line. Sometimes you will have two different cruise lines leaving from the same port on the same day going to the same destination, however, there can be a huge difference in price. It never hurts to try a new product and you may be surprised how much you like. This can save you quite a few bucks!
  4. Not signing up for a weekly deal alert—weekly email newsletters, like our own SEASaver, are really valuable. There is an entire team of people searching for finding the best deals available and send it directly to you. These top 5 deals are either great because of price, itinerary or special promotions. It is really a great way to stay on top of the cruise trends! Sail the seas with us and SEASaver ,or our industry-first CruiseText!

Waiting for a Last Minute Cruise Deal? Don't.

I often have clients call and ask about last minute deals.

They have  heard a story about someone getting an unbelievably good deal a day or two before a particular sailing.

Unfortunately I always have to give them the bad news of the ship being sold out or give them the pricing that is through the roof. I hate being the bad guy, but last minute cruise deals are typically an elusive creature.

The truth of the matter is, as with most things, a cruise ship is all about the supply verses demand. As the ship fills up and heads closer to capacity, the rate goes up up up. So usually just a couple of days prior to sailing the rates are pretty high for undesirable cabins, if there is anything left at all.

I have found that if a particular ship and sail date has a lot of availability the cruise line will reduce the rate or offer a promotion about 4 to 6 weeks prior to departure. Most of the time, this method successfully fills up the ship and then prices will go up up up once again.

Also, the days of heading to the pier and hopping on whatever ship that isn’t full is no longer an option since 9/11. The cruise lines close their passenger manifest usually 24- 48 hours prior to sailing.

While a lot of people wait and gamble for those mysterious last minute deals, your best bet all around is to purchase your preferred sailing in advance.

By booking in advance you make sure you get the best cabin possible, as there are more choices. Booking last minute you won’t have many options if you have a particular category or location in mind.

This is especially important for families! Ships have a very limited number of cabins that will hold 3 and 4 passengers, so they fill up first! Booking last minute as a family means you will usually have to sail in multiple staterooms.

In most cases if you notice the price drops before final payment the cruise line will adjust your booking to reflect the lower rate . Just make sure you keep your eye on it and notify your cruise guide as soon as you see a drop.  And if the price increases,  no worries because you are already locked into the lower rate! It is a win-win.

I tend to use this strategy with my personal cruise vacations. For example, I know that the closer you get to sailing with Disney the higher the price, so I have already booked my cruise for September 2012. I have a great rate held with a small deposit and if I need to cancel I can do so before final payment without penalty. Again, definition of a win-win!

Now there can be great deals on a last minute cruise, they do happen every now and then, just make sure you don’t wait too long. Because most often it is a LOT more expensive to go on a whim then if you plan ahead.
