Ports of Departure: Sail into History with the Port of Charleston

I think most residents of the southeast are thrilled that Carnival Cruise Line now has a ship, the Carnival Fantasy, that departs year-round from the Port of Charleston located in Historic Charleston, South Carolina.

Consistently ranked as one of the top 10 tourism destinations in the world by Conde Nast magazine, this is an amazing city to say the least and its location on the East Coast makes it convenient for many.

With a rich history of over 300 years, Charleston is a living museum.  Take in the cobblestone, sand and water, the architecture, the arts and culture, the dining, tours, entertainment, attractions, and the nation’s most comprehensive Visitor Center. And that is just a small sampling!

Here are some tips that will help you navigate the Port of Charleston.

Parking:

  • The terminal is within two miles of both Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 17 and is easy to locate once in the city.
  • Parking at the pier is $15.00 per day. The parking area is only available to cruise passengers and is patrolled by the Port Police. They currently accept cash, traveler’s checks or personal checks.
  • The parking garage is located few short minutes from the cruise terminal. A shuttle is provided for your convenience and comfort.

Ports of Departure: Your Guide to Cruising from Baltimore, Maryland

The historical Port of Baltimore is over 300 years old. In 1706, Maryland’s legislators designated Whetstone Point as an official Port of Entry. Five small ports eventually merged to become the Port of Baltimore. The port has grown to 45 miles of shoreline and more than 3,400 waterfront acres.

With that growth has come the boom in cruise ship traffic. Maryland offers 105 cruises to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England and the Eastern Caribbean on Carnival Cruise Line’s Pride, & Royal Caribbean International’s Enchantment of the Seas.  In 2011, Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International will offer year round sailings from the Cruise Maryland terminal.

Hotels near the Port of Baltimore

The Baltimore cruise terminal is a converted 65,000-square-foot warehouse. The new facility, construction of a paved parking lot and dredging to accommodate the large cruise ships cost $13 million.

Make sure to extend your vacation and enjoy all that the Baltimore area has to offer. Relish in our nation’s history in Washington, or check out Baltimore’s Inner Harbor that boasts the best of Baltimore attractions within walking distance.

  • Parking is $15.00 per night and no advanced reservations are required. Upon arrival you will be directed to drop off your luggage prior to parking. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted expect Discover Card.
  • The closest airport is Baltimore Washington International (BWI). Taxis will cost approximately $30.00 and will not take more than four passengers at a time. There are also shuttles offered at the airport as well as the cruise lines own transfers.
  • The Amtrak train station is only located 11.5 miles from the cruise terminal, so this is an option for traveling to the Port of Baltimore.
  • There are several hotels that offer free parking and free round trip shuttles to the cruise port with a one night stay. Sleep Inn and Suites, Comfort Inn BWI Airport, Holiday Inn Express Baltimore at the Stadiums, and La Quinta Inn and Suites are a few of them. This is a great way to save on parking and embark on your cruise refreshed.
