Epic Excursions: 5 Things to Know Before you Brave the Zipline

Zip-lining is a popular shore excursion for the more adventurous cruise passenger. I mean, who wouldn’t want to soar high above the ground with only a rope between you and the ground and…well you know the rest.

I am juuust kidding, it is really a rewarding experience and I think almost everyone should try it, however, there are a few things to know before you go.

  1. There is usually a weight limit of 240 to 250 pounds. If you are above this weight you will not be allowed to participate.
  2. There is a minimum age, usually 8 years old. Maybe this would be a good time to have someone in your party stay back with the younger children so you can fully enjoy the experience.
  3. Pregnant women and guests with heart problems, knee problems, back/neck/shoulder injuries will not be allowed to join in the fun.
  4. Make sure you wear closed-toed shoes. You also might want to consider pants, and definitely bring some bug spray.
  5. There is some walking involved. You will have to walk between the different zip lines, and this does include walking up-hill which can be strenuous. Make sure you research the area to pick the best port of call for you to zip-line.

This is a thrilling excursion that will definitely be an adrenaline-filled memory. Be safe, have fun and zip-zip away!

If sailing down a zip-line through the trees sounds a bit daunting, maybe you could try it onboard your cruise ship? Yes, on Royal Caribbean’s revolutionary Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas you can actually zip-line through the Boardwalk Neighborhood…now that is WOW. Check out more here.

Wipe Out! 5 Things To Know Before You Ride the FlowRider®

What is a FlowRider?!

This is a surf simulator where you can either ride a boogie board, or if you’re really brave a surf board.

The complimentary FlowRider experience is offered 5 of Royal Caribbean’s ships…Freedom, Liberty, Independence, Oasis and Allure of the Seas. Oasis and Allure each have two FlowRiders!

I have personally ridden the waves on three ships. I took my first ride on the Freedom of the Seas back in May of 2006, it’s hard to believe it’s been almost 6 years already. It is sooo much fun.

The one thing I noticed, both while riding and standing in line, is that everyone cheers for the person riding the waves.  Everyone is involved and cheering you on. That’s what makes it even more fun! You don’t have to worry about if people are going to laugh, because they don’t….really!

The staff working on each ship was always helpful and encouraging.

Here are my Top 5 suggestions on how to brave the waves on the FlowRider:

  1. Take the time to watch other people do it before you get on a board. It’s fun to watch and you will see what to do and what not to do
  2. If you haven’t been on a surfboard before, I would not suggest starting here. I would suggest getting a feel for the waves on a boogie board, you won’t have far to fall!
  3. When it’s your turn, listen carefully to the staff member on how to hold your board and where to aim when hitting the wave. It can seem intimidating, but if you listen to what they tell you it’ll work I promise.   Thankfully, I have never wiped out upon entering the wave.
  4. The one thing they don’t tell you—you can’t see!! The water is splashing up in your face so you can maybe see 2- 3 inches front of you.  Just be prepared for limited visibility. This is important when you need to steer, which you do simply by leaning either to the left or right, forward or backward.  If you go too far back…BAM! You are wiping out!  But, you get right back up and do it again!
  5. My top thing to know before riding the FlowRider? WOMEN: wear a one piece or a t-shirt and shorts on top of a 2 piece.  MEN: make sure your strings are tied tight!   I don’t think I need to say any more on this subject!

Whatever you do…HAVE FUN!! KOWABUNGA!!

Onboard Experience: Energizing Activities Offered on Royal Caribbean

Whenever I cruise, I believe I can safely say what I look forward to the most are the shows (okay…second to the food!).

Well, Royal Caribbean, in my humble opinion, has some of the BEST shows at sea!

I don’t even know where to begin with the value of entertainment onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise!

Let’s start with some of the extraordinary activities you will find on their innovative ships–

  • Every Royal Caribbean ship has their signature Rock Climbing Wall. They were the first cruise line to have such a thing!
  • All of their ships (except the Monarch and Majesty of the Seas) have a Putt-Putt Course, as RCCL is the official cruise line of the PGA and Senior PGA.
  • Then starting with the Voyager class ships, Royal added an Ice Skating Rink! Again, the first cruise line to offer this.
  • Also onboard the Voyager ships (Explorer, Navigator, Mariner, Voyager, Adventure) is an In-Line Skating (roller blade) Track.

Central Park Neighborhood on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class of Ships

Stepping onboard Royal Caribbean’s mega-ships, the Oasis or Allure of the Seas, could be intimidating for some. These ships are truly cities on water. There is so much to see and do it is hard to figure out just what to do first.

The Central Park Neighborhood on these marvels absolutely needs to be on your list of areas onboard to see first. You won’t be able to believe you are still on a cruise ship.

  • The first thing I fell in love with is all the greenery. Royal Caribbean brings the outdoors in with Central Park, a revolutionary design in which the center of the ship opens to the sky and features lush, tropical grounds spanning more than the length of a football field.
  • The sun shines down from above and there are so many quiet, tucked away places to sit and relax among trees, bushes, and tranquil gardens. This is a perfect place to read a book or just take a few moments to relax and enjoy some solitude.
  • This area also boasts some wonderful shops. My two favorite boutiques are Coach and the Britto Art Gallery. I must say I brought home a little something from both, my husband was thrilled ;) .Truly one of the most relaxing shopping experience I have ever had.
  • Two upper-scale specialty restaurants are also located in Central Park. Chops Grille is the first restaurant which offers a fabulous menu of steak and seafood dishes. I would recommend the Grilled Alaskan Halibut. This a one of a kind dining experience from the décor to the menu and service.
  • 150 Central Park, the most exclusive dining venue on the ship, provides an intimate dining experience. This warm setting offers a multicourse tasting-style menu which is paired beautifully with their wine tasting program. Whichever restaurant you choose, there is no way you can go wrong.
  • Also enjoy Vintages Bar, Trellis Bar, and Park Café. The Central Park Neighborhood is a wonderful place to unwind from a busy and eventful day.
  • I loved this area so much the next time I sail on the Oasis or Allure of the Seas, I will do so in a Central Park balcony (I previously sailed in the Boardwalk Balcony, what an experience!). These balconies actually look to the interior of the ship into the park. So you can enjoy this serene area even from your balcony.
