My Favorite Cruise Things: Most Memorable Shore Excursion

As a personal cruise guide, I have had the fortune to sail on a number of cruises, to some of the world’s most exciting and beautiful destinations.

My most memorable cruise vacation was my cruise tour to Alaska with Princess Cruises. I fell head over heels in love with Alaska, if I could live there each summer (maybe not the winter months:) ), I would! Alaska’s majesty and beauty is like nothing I have ever seen.

It was on the land portion of this wonderful vacation that I would have to say I also experienced my most memorable excursion; Denali National Park Tour through Princess Cruises.

Upon entering Denali National Park, your car is only allowed so far before you must board a bus for the rest of your Park tour. This is to cut down on pollution, so I was happy to join the group and continue on. The bus driver is also, conveniently, your tour guide. These drivers are filled with so much knowledge of the park, and Alaska in general, it is truly an educational, enriching bus ride!

My favorite part of exploring the park were the animal sightings.

I witnessed first-hand two moose fighting, right next to the road we were on! (I don’t think many people can say they have seen that up close and personal, do you?)

It was like a postcard, the grizzly bears were frolicking in the rivers and bald eagles were soaring overhead. Around every bend there were spectacular mountain views and wildlife to awe and inspire you.

Not only were the views amazing and the wildlife abundant, but the first thing I personally noticed was the clean fresh air. I spent most of my time outside, even while dining on our tour. Everything seemed so pure, and I must say it was absolutely a life changing experience. That may sound a bit cliche, however, the natural beauty was something I will never forget.

With Princess Cruises, there are many land excursions offered within Denali National Park, so you can customize your time to fit your needs.

Choose from:

  • Nature Hikes & Scenic Tours
  • Helicopter & Flightseeing Tours
  • Rafting, Fishing & Boating
  • Four-Wheel-Drive Tours
  • Alaskan Culture & Heritage

So if you are planning a cruise to Alaska, you must consider adding a 3-5 day land tour to your vacation before or after your cruise. The value is unbelievable, and the opportunity to see Alaska from both sea and land is sure to be a vacation you will never forget!

Tips for Taking an Alaskan Cruise

There is no other way to say it. Alaska is a beautiful place. It truly has amazing scenery, wildlife and marine life.

Although Alaska is a year round vacation destination, the majority of visitors arrive during the cruising seasonprimarily mid-May to mid-September. There are benefits and tips to traveling during any part of this season.

The beginning of the Alaska cruising season is mid-May–

  • This is a wonderful time to visit, the weather is consistently beautiful, and dry, with the spring sun out for longer periods of time. This abundance of sunshine brings out Alaska’s amazing wildflowers for spectacular viewing.
  • This is also a great time to see wildlife (the larger animals are migrating and in lower elevations where the snow has disappeared) and marine life. You can take a shore excursion to see hump back whales for a little extra treat! If you are worried about the mosquitoes (as the summer months in Alaska can be quite ‘buggy’) the night time frosts have killed off most of these pesky insects so they shouldn’t be a problem.
  • Another reason to visit during May is because it tends to be a little bit less expensive, you can take advantage of ‘early season’ rates and specials. This is a great way to save a buck or two.
  • Something to watch out for is that not all shops will be open until the beginning of June. If you are an avid shopper this is something to think about.

A Tale of Two Alaskas

Every time I have a client going to Alaska, I can’t help but tell them about the perfect complement to an Alaskan cruise, the land portion.  As fantastic as a cruise to Alaska is, it is only half of the story. I truly believe that the interior of Alaska is just as important as the cruise. They are two completely different experiences, and since most people may only get to experience Alaska once, why not see all that the state has to offer and do an Alaskan cruise tour.

I personally did the interior of Alaska on a cruise tour with Princess Cruise Lines a couple of years ago, and I cannot say enough about how wonderful it was. I had mixed feelings since I was leaving my five month old baby home.  I really thought I would just want to get the trip over with and rush home to see my little angel. While I was excited to see him when I got home, during my cruise tour, I fell in love with Alaska. The lodges, food, service, and scenery were exceptional.

When I stepped out of my room at Denali Lodge, I felt like I was in the middle of a postcard.

Even the air seemed so pure and crisp. My favorite lodge was McKinley Lodge.  It is the closest lodge to Mt. McKinley. This lodge has huge windows from floor to ceiling and a direct view of the mountain. It is breathtaking.  There are also several hiking trails with placards offering neat facts along the way. To get to this lodge, you take the glass dome train into Talkeetna, which is a neat town within itself.  The train allows you to relax while enjoying beautiful scenery and wildlife.  I was even surprised how good the food was on board the train.

I feel like Alaska is an experience of a lifetime.  So, if you are planning on taking a cruise to Alaska, don’t forget about the tour!  You won’t be sorry.
