My Steak Needs a Massage!

One thing I will never be a accused of is having a great palate, but I do recognize the difference between a steak I cook at home, a good steak and a great steak.

It is very rare that I will bypass the opportunity for a great steak no matter how good the Rack of Lamb or Lobster may sound.  A great steak, with a nice glass of wine and I am all set for a great evening.

One reason I love to cruise is that I may have a fantastic filet two or three times in a week. And if I want the lamb or lobster, they will bring that to me as well!

With that said, I have never had the privilege of enjoying what is widely known as the best beef in the world, Kobe beef.  And I highly doubt it is in my future as I am far too practical to spend on ONE dinner what amounts to the cost of, well, a cruise!

For example, we had a customer recently inquire about a 17 day Japan to Alaska cruise on Holland America’s Volendam.

This amazing itinerary, which at present starts at $1399 per person, actually begins in of all places Kobe, Japan the home of Kobe beef or Tajima beef as it is also called.  From what I figure the cost of this cruise is about the equivalent of two to three Kobe beef dinners!

So what does that have to do with a massage?

Well, one of the techniques the local ranchers in Kobe use to make their beef special is to regularly massage their cattle.

Seriously!  If you don’t believe me, Google it.

And get this, they also give them beer.  It is said that a relaxed cow makes not just great beef, but $50 an ounce great beef!

Just to make sure we have this straight, a massage and a beer leads to greatness in beef?

Change the beer to wine and it sounds like my wife’s perfect Friday night, a Cabernet and a massage by a Japanese cattle rancher!  OK, the massage is suppose to come from me.  “I’ll be right there honey, right after I finish grilling the filet”, which cost $9.99 a pound.

What’s the moral of this story?

Well, there are two.  First, if you want a Kobe filet, why not have it in Kobe, Japan and then head out on a cruise of a lifetime.  And more importantly, if you ever have a steak that is too tough, send it back for a massage!

If that got you craving a massage, this definitely will not help!
