Best Time to Take a European Cruise

The European Cruising Season is primarily May through September. Depending on the cruise line, you will still have sailings offered in October and November.

The cruise lines reposition their ships to/from areas such as the Caribbean in late March-early April to start the season, and late September-early October at the end of the season. Since these cruises typically depart from one port and end in another – they offer a blend of exciting cities you wouldn’t see on our other itineraries, all at extremely attractive pricing!

There are lines, such as Costa and MSC, that offer convenient year-round sailings in Europe.

As for the best time to go, that is a hard one to answer and depends somewhat on what part of Europe you are visiting.

  • The peak season, or busiest season, for the Eastern and Western Mediterranean is May through August. You will definitely get to experience a refreshing cultural mix of passengers on board. Keep in mind a few things: the rates will be more expensive, the crowds will be bigger and the temperatures will be warmer than any other time of the year. To get a better deal try sailing in April or October when weather is mild and ports aren’t quite so congested.
  • If you are sailing Northern Europe the peak season is June to August. This area is beautiful this time of year with sunny skies (the locals spend most of their days outside enjoying the wonderful weather). If you prefer to cruise its slower season, try early June or September. The kids are back in school, the weather is still lovely, and it is not as busy. Of course a huge plus, the prices are lower as well!
  • The Southern Mediterranean is a very popular cruise destination with the peak season being May to September. Due to its popularity, the small Mediterranean ports will be busy and crowds large as numerous ships will be docked at one time. If you are looking for a good deal in weather that may not be quite so hot, cruise lines such as Costa and MSC offer awesome winter deals. They give you the option to experience this wonderful region without all the crowds, for a lot less.

Europe is definitely a popular destination as passengers are broadening their cruising horizons. However, the summer is peak season so if you would like to save a few bucks and still have great weather try the spring or fall.

Happy sailing. Or better yet–Bon Voyage! Buon Viaggio! Buen Viaje!  God reise-God Tur!
