Are You Single?

Are you single?

No, I’m not trying to pick you up! There are a lot of single travelers out there, are you one of them?

If your answer is no, because you don’t like the idea of being alone on vacation, that’s not a good enough excuse.

There are many ways to travel as a single person.

It use to be that if you were single you could get a “match up.” This is where the cruise line and/or travel company would find a roommate/cabin mate of the same gender and around the same age as you. They no longer do this mostly for security and safety reasons. But that should not stop you from seeing the world.

Some cruise lines have special single rates where you can avoid paying that 150 – 200% supplement. But, just like any other cruise, if you look around or plan your vacations during an off peak time you can save a lot of money.

For example, on Holland America ms Westerdam sailing May 14, 2011, a single in the least expensive cabin (interior) will cost $500 less versus the same ship doing the same itinerary on July 9, 2011.

That’s a $500 savings for going to the same places, just going during the off peak travel time. This holds true whether you are a single traveler or if you are traveling as a group.

And now there is a brand new ship that caters to single travelers.

The Norwegian Epic has what they call their Studio staterooms. They are designed specifically for single travelers and there are no supplement fees!

Now the rooms are small, but to make up for it, you will have access to their Studio Lounge which is exclusive for the 100 plus Studio staterooms. It is a great way to meet new friends and travel with people, but still maintain your freedom.

In my opinion, traveling single has a lot of advantages. Traveling solo does NOT mean traveling alone!

Although I am married now with 2 kids, I use to travel A LOT when I was young and single. Let me tell you, I had some of the best vacations as a single traveler. I didn’t have to wait for others in my party to get up and get ready, nor did I have to see what they wanted to do that particular day or where they wanted to eat. I was able to do things at my leisure and I still have a fabulous time.

One of my favorite vacations, as a single traveler, was when I went to Alaska. I met so many wonderful people and got to see and do so much more because I didn’t have to worry about pleasing someone else.

On a cruise people can be very friendly. It’s easy to make friends. Before long you won’t feel alone at all, unless of course you want to be alone.
